Newsletter No 29  –  2015

This is an irregular newsletter from OSGUG to inform you about recent and upcoming events and other news.

Burns Supper

The Burns Supper will be held on Saturday 31st January at The Cosener’s House in Abingdon, the same venue as the last few years. We will have a slightly different format this time. The musicians will be taking a rest this year so Ken McClements will be giving us his Tam O’Shanter. Alistair Mills will toast The Immortal Memory. If anyone else would like to contribute with a poem, song, or recital please get in touch.

Chancellor’s Visit

Sir Kenneth Calman chatting with OSGUG members.

The Chancellor of Glasgow University, Sir Kenneth Calman, gave a talk at  Saint Hilda’s College in October, followed by lunch.  It was both entertaining and informative. He showed us a lot about the plans for the development of the enlarged Gilmorehill campus taking over the existing Western Infirmary and development of the Kelvin Hall to include the Hunterian Museum and Gallery with the nearby Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery, creating a museum hub in the West End. There is obviously scope for big changes to the university environment although these will take many years work. I particularly liked his ambition for a zipwire from the top of Gilmorehill Tower to the Kelvingrove Museum.

Eddie Bateman

I am saddened to report the death of long-time OSGUG member Eddie Bateman at the end of November after a short illness. The church in his village of Appleton was standing room only at the celebration of his life held there on 12th December. It was a happy resumé of Eddie’s life with several recollections from friends, colleagues and family. I saw a number of OSGUG members there but it was so crowded I may have missed some. Our thoughts are with Carol.

The 2015 AGM will be held on Saturday March 21st  at The Vine in Cumnor.  The same arrangement as recent years: AGM followed by lunch for those who wish it. Alistair plans to stand down as Treasurer so we are looking for a volunteer to take on this role.   It is not an onerous task as OSGUG’s accounts are simple.

Future Events

A tour of Rewley House is still on the cards and possibly another college visit. Sir Drummond Bone, Master of Balliol and GU graduate has offered to host an event so your committee will try to organise something suitable, possibly another talk and lunch. If anyone has suggestions for other events we could hold I would be grateful to hear from you.

I wish you all a Peaceful Christmas and a Guid New Year
